Wayne Andrews
Biography and Stats
During his career,
Siler City, North Carolina's Wayne Andrews competed in 28 NASCAR Grand National East races and
compiled 2 top-five and 14 top-ten finishes in the series. Andrews
best finish in Grand National East competition was fourth place in
the 1972 Columbia 200 (Columbia, South Carolina), finishing only one
lap down to race winner Max Berrier. He managed to keep his
1970 Mustang on the lead lap of the event until being passed with
only four laps remaining in the 102 mile race. Four months later, he
followed his Columbia 200 performance up with a fifth-place finish
in the Sandlapper 200, also at Columbia Speedway. The photo
at right was taken at Hickory Motor Speedway
(Hickory, North Carolina) in 1972 and includes Andrews, car owner
Jack St Clair, St Clair's son and Darrell Bryant. Andrews
piloted the St. Clair owned Ford Mustang in both 1972 NASCAR Grand
National East and Grand American competition.

Andrews also competed
in 70 NASCAR Grand American Series events during the 1969 - 1972
seasons, captured the 1972 series championship and earned an
impressive 41 top-five finishes. At his first series event,
Andrews captured the pole at Smokey Mountain Raceway on May 3, 1969
with a track record speed of 85.959 mph. He would go on to
capture the 1969 Rookie of the Year honors for the series in his
ex-Bud Moore Racing Mercury Cougar. During the 1972 Grand American
season, Andrews campaigned a Ford Mustang for car-owner Jack St.
Clair and beat veteran Ernie Shaw for the series championship by 144
points. Andrews is pictured at right with his Reid Shaw Grand
American Mercury Cougar at Daytona International Speedway in 1970.
The Siler City, North
Carolina native competed in six NASCAR Winston Cup / Sprint Cup
races with his best finish coming at Hickory Motor Speedway in
August 1971. Andrews finished fifth behind Tiny Lund, Elmo
Langley, Richard Petty and Bobby Allison in the Buddy Shuman 276 at
the .363 mile North Carolina oval. During the 1971 season, he
would also earn a sixth-place finish at Columbia in the Sandlapper
200 and a seventh place finish at Winston-Salem in the Myers
Brothers 250, both while driving his Reid Shaw owned Ford Mustang.
Andrews finished out his racing career in the mid-seventies in the
NASCAR Late Model Sportsman division.
