Buddy Baker, who
currently ranks 10th in the Winston Cup Grand National standings, won Sunday's
Hickory 276 Grand National East race at Hickory, N. C ., assuming the point lead
in that division. Driving the powerful K &K Dodge, the 6 foot-5 inch Charlotte,
NC, native battled Bobby Allison of Hueytown, Ala., the entire 100-mile
distance before a packed house of 11,000 people.
Baker 's point total stands at 129 while Allison picked up 118
for h is second - place finish. Rookie Vic Parsons of Willowdale, Ontario,
Canada, is third with 116.50 points in the Seifert Racing Ford. The Grand
National East Division, now entering its second season of competition, also
benefits from the Winston Cup program. Winston contributed $15,000 to t he point
fund in 1972 with Grand National East champ Neil Castles winning $10,000 and
runner - up Elmo Langley receiving $5,000. Winston will continue the same
programs in 1973 in the Winston Cup series and Grand National East and West
divisions. Two Dan ville drivers, Bobby Fleming and Wendell Scott, competed
Sunday at Hickory finishing 15 and 20 respectively. Fleming was in a 1971 Camaro and Scott in a 1971 Ford
