Mountaineer 300

Ona, WV (May 21, 1972)
300 laps on 7/16 mile paved oval; 131.25 miles

ONA, W. Va. (AP) - NASCAR stormer Bobby Allison has added this year's Mountaineer 300 to his list of Grand National victories and $1,650 in prize
money to his pocket. Allison covered, the asphalt oval in an average speed of 68.417 miles per hour Sunday to win a race studded with six caution flags that slowed the progress of 40 laps.

Jim Paschal had held the pole position in his 1972 Firebird with a qualifying time of 84.04 m.p.h. His car finished second, on the same lap as Allison, but be was not at the race's conclusion. Overcome by heat exhaustion, Paschall turned his mount over in the 167th lap to Allison's younger brother Donny.  Twenty cars started the race but only nine were still running at the finish.

Winner Allison was involved in a spectacular tangle in the same lap as his brother took over Pashcal's car.  Neil Castles and Max Berrier tangled with the guard rail coming out of turn three.  They were unable to continue because of auto damage but Allison went on to victory.  Veteran Buck Baker's Firebird was sent into the guardrail in one mishap as it was hooked by H. B. Bailey's Firebird.  Baker was able to continue and picked up seventh place.
